Ben 10 Season 3 Episode 1 — "Midnight Madness"
The third season of the original Ben 10 animated series kicks off with a highly entertaining and unusual challenge. The adventure begins with Episode 1, "Midnight Madness," where a routine breakdown at a massive shopping mall pulls Ben into a bizarre web of hypnotic manipulation and sleepwalking chaos.
When the Rustbucket breaks down right outside Mega-Mall-Opolis—the largest mall in the US—Ben and Gwen think they are about to have the ultimate fun day. However, they cross paths with a sinister stage hypnotist named Sublimino. Under the guise of audience entertainment, the villain secretly hypnotizes Ben, binding him to a subconscious role as a nighttime thief.
Episode Summary
The Tennysons enjoy a fun-filled day at Mega-Mall-Opolis until they watch a performance by "The Amazing Sublimino, Master of Hypnosis". Looking for volunteers, Sublimino picks Ben and uses a hidden hypnotic wave generator to put him completely under his spell, making him act like a baby and a chicken for the audience's amusement. When told to act like an alien, Ben subconsciously activates the Omnitrix, forcing Gwen to hide him behind a curtain just as he transforms into Grey Matter.
Though Gwen brings him out of it temporarily, Sublimino's hypnotic trigger remains embedded in Ben's mind. Later that night, as the clock tower strikes 12, the hypnotic signal reactivates. A sleepwalking Ben unknowingly uses the Omnitrix to transform into powerful aliens like Diamondhead and Upgrade, breaking into the mall stores and delivering stolen merchandise right to Sublimino.
As mall security reports mysterious alien sightings and theft, Grandpa Max and Gwen become suspicious of Ben's extreme daytime exhaustion. Catching him in the act as Upgrade the following night, Gwen and Max race to the mall to intervene. Ben must find a way to snap out of his trance before Sublimino unleashes a grand scheme to hypnotize hundreds of mall-goers simultaneously and control them forever.
Themes & Character Development
- Loss of Control: The episode explores the vulnerability of having one's free will compromised. Ben's ultimate asset, the Omnitrix, becomes a liability when controlled by someone else.
- Sibling Dynamics: Gwen uses the initial hypnosis to record embarrassing videos of Ben, but her deeper loyalty and quick actions save him from exposing his secret identity on stage.
- Unconventional Villains: Moving away from cosmic warlords like Vilgax, this episode introduces a quirky, mind-controlling antagonist who relies entirely on manipulation over brute strength.

Fun Facts & Trivia
Did You Know?
- Sublimino is one of the shortest human villains in the series, but his mind-control technology makes him incredibly dangerous.
- When Upgrade escapes security by merging with the mall's clock tower, he turns the clock arms into helicopter blades, marking one of his most creative transformations.
- Sublimino later joins the Negative 10, a group of Ben's recurring enemies assembled in the two-part Season 4 finale.
- The "Mega-Mall-Opolis" featured in this episode is heavily inspired by the real-world Mall of America located in Minnesota.
- This is one of the rare episodes where Ben's transformations (Diamondhead) occur completely off-screen during his sleepwalking crime sprees.
Legacy & Impact
"Midnight Madness" acts as a fantastic opener for Season 3, setting a tone that merges everyday childhood realities—like hanging out at a shopping mall—with dangerous superhero conflicts. It highlights the versatility of the franchise's episodic storytelling, proving that threats don't always have to come from outer space to be genuinely challenging for Team Tennyson.
The episode remains a fan-favorite for its humorous moments, distinct visuals, and the unique pressure it places on Gwen and Grandpa Max to protect Ben from his own sleepwalking power. It reinforces that being a hero requires a strong mind just as much as a powerful alien form.
